The hardest substance in the human body?

12 July 2015

Tooth enamel (the surface of your teeth that you can see) is the hardest substance in the human body - even harder than bone!

Tooth enamel isn't living and is mostly made of apatite crystals which contain calcium and phosphate.

Your adult (permanent) teeth have enamel that's roughly twice as thick (and harder) than your baby teeth had.

Although tooth enamel is hard and good protection against caries (cavities) it can be damaged by acid and sugar.
